The proposed Comenius Language Project is between Aberdeen College, Scotland and Haapaveden Opisto Finland. Its purpose is to bring together multimedia students and staff from each country and to give them opportunity to work together to study Scottish and Finnish cultures using their practical skills in multimedia (Television Operations and Productions, Music and Audio Technology and Graphic Technology), to highlight and learn from the differences both in in audiovisual communication systems and in the cultures, to note and document examples of good practice and to become aware of differing philosophies and methodologies in multimedia work and to get acquainted with various enterprises of this field. The project also affords the opportunity for the participating students and staff to learn something of the language of the other country and to see at first hand something of the way of life in another European country. As staff and students in each country work together during the planning stage of the project via email and videoconferencing, they will not only get to know each other but will have the opportunity to learn something of the education system, the geography, the culture, the traditions etc of the country they will be visiting.Comenius Language Project 2006 Multimedia as a Tool of Cultural Exchange
The essential feature of the proposed exchange would be for the students to work together to produce an end product, a bilingual factual documentary programme (DVD). It is anticipated that the students from each country will work together to compile the information of cultural differences and similarities of the both countries and subsequently work together in groups to create the bilingual end product. In addition to sharing multimedia skills, culture and traditions, the participants will have the opportunity to converse in the other language, to visit places in the field of multimedia and to experience life in the other country. Participants will have their horizons broadened in every sense of the word and ties between the two countries will be that much closer.
II Leg of the Exchange in Haapavesi 17. – 29.4.2006
Ten students from Aberdeen College with their teachers Gillian Martin and Kevin Laingspent two weeks at Haapaveden Opisto working with the same video production which the Finnish group started in Scotland in February. The students were researching the culture, history, society and events of their partner country. The Scottish group was filming five separate sections of video production which included themes of sport & leisure, food &drink, history & sightseeing and culture. The Finnish group finished the their own post-production the same weeks, so the first part of the end product (DVD) is now ready and we all are looking with excitement forward to the second part of the end product: Finland with Scottish eyes!
