IMMIGRANT REPRESENTATION STARTUP PROJECT

 This project aims to finding solutions for organising guidance and counselling services to immigrants at early stages of immigration. The project operates in Oulu Southern region (Haapavesi-Siikalatva subregion, Nivala-Haapajärvi subregion and Ylivieska subregion).

Results

The project develops a service model for immigrant guidance and counselling based on immigrant coordinator services. During the project a regional integration plan and regional multiculturalism strategy are developed in cooperation with local organisations. One goal is also that cooperation between authorities enhances and their multiculturalism knowledge grows.

Guidance and counseling

Guidance and counselling are given to all immigrants living in Oulu Southern region regardless of the reason for or time of arrival in Finland. The appointments can be occasional or the duration of counselling can go on for a longer period of time. Basic information on Finnish society is given to customers and they are directed in to working on their own. The immigrant coordinators offices are located in Haapavesi, Kalajoki and Nivala. The staff also visits other municipalities in the region.

Target groups

The project is aimed for immigrants living in the Oulu southern region regardless of the reason for or time of arrival in Finland. Other target groups are people who meet immigrants in their work (authorities, municipalities, companies, associations, institutions, congregations).

Duration and funding

The immigrant representation startup project is active from 1.4.2011 to 31.12.2013. The Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment in North Ostrobothnia has granted ESF funding for the project. The municipalities in Oulu Southern and Haapaveden opisto (Haapavesi Folk High School) participate in funding of the project.
